About Your Course
This course is industry informed and focuses on applying the latest technology and management systems to analyse current engineering issues. These issues include the ability to respond rapidly to changes in the global market by inventing products that address agile, environmental and management control issues. Simulation of automation and management systems is used by students to analyse these issues and test solutions. The course is aimed at those who have a degree in engineering and would like to enhance their professional qualification, as well as professionals already in industry who want to become leaders in process control and new product development.
The first semester concentrates on process control and the second concentrates on new product development. Successful completion of semester one provides a postgraduate certificate; semester two a postgraduate diploma; and on completion of the semester three project you will gain a masters qualification.

You will have access to excellent equipment and resources including a Rapid Prototyping Machine, Programmable Logic Controllers, VICOM motion capture system and the latest engineering software such as Flexsim and the Autodesk Suite.
You will be taught by a team of experts who are research active and have published books and written many papers in the field of engineering. Professor Reinhold Behringer is our current running stream professor who has worked at the Rockwell scientific Institute in Southern California on the SciAutonics Project which produces Autonomous Robots.

Core modules include:
Simulation & Modelling (Semester one) (20 Credits)
Uses continuous event simulation and 3D modelling techniques to construct virtual factories that use automated systems. You will conduct an analysis of material flow using discrete event simulation.
Engineering Systems Control (Semester one) (20 Credits)
You will study real time control issues using the latest PLC controls and emulation software. You will conduct remote monitoring using Web enabled software and wireless connectivity.
Engineering Management (Semester one) (20 Credits)
This module covers project planning, costing and human resources, with the opportunity for you to take Prince 2 qualifications at our NTI centre. The issues regarding controlling quality (Six sigma) and analysing and presenting data are also covered.

A range of assessment methods are used. The projects and dissertation are based on your workplace or live projects through our company clients. This format will help you apply your learning in line with your career aspirations.
Teaching & Learning
The delivery of this course is flexible and you have the option of studying full-time (2 days per week) or part-time (one day per week).
The course uses online resources to help you balance your studies with your home and work commitments. Our virtual learning environment will enable you to access podcasts, video conferencing, lecture notes, case studies, forums and points of help anytime, any where. You will benefit from the increased contact time and collaboration with staff and students on the course creating a community and support network.

Dr Nick Cope has a research background and has an interest in new products and prototypes using intelligent devices. More recently he has published in the area of augmented reality with Dr Steve Wilkinson
Dr Steve Wilkinson has published 2 books in the field of engineering, in particular e-manufacture. He has written many papers in this area, especially on the simulation of flexible manufacturing systems.
Duncan Folley has studied engineering at a high level, winning a Masters by research in the area of automated systems. He has written many papers in the field of engineering and education. He is currently completing another Masters in Blended and Online Education.

A scholarship of £1,500 is available to new full-time students studying an MA, MSC or MBA (180 credits) who are eligible to pay Home/EU fees. Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) Students
Higher fees apply for ELQ students. You may be an ELQ student if you already have a BA/BSc and want to enrol on another
Bachelors level course; if you already have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on a Bachelors level course OR if you already
have an MA/MSc and want to enrol on another taught Masters level course.
If you think you may be categorised as studying for an ELQ, you are advised to contact our Admissions Office.

10% Discount for graduates
Graduates of Leeds Metropolitan University and partner colleges within the Regional University Network (RUN), qualify for a 10% discount on postgraduate tuition fees if they have graduated within the last five years.
